May be it’s that wonder when you got your first model train that stuck with you all your life, or may it’s a friend who showed you a whole new world of wonder in model trains. Then perhaps you’re an ace do it yourselfer who saw what someone did with model trains in their back yard or garden. However chances are, if you’re reading this article, you’ve been bitten by the model train bug!

Model trains have come a long way since the days when they were wind up toys with mechanisms like a clock. Thanks to plastic that allows a more realistic look than metal, model trains have grown by leaps and bounds, and have spawned garden railway, and model train clubs all over the world.

However, what if you liked what you saw in a picture, or were looking for a new kind of hobby to get into and you went on the internet to find out more? It can be a daunting task, first, because there is so much variety available out there now, and secondly, whom do you buy from?

A very good place to start is by finding a model train club that is near to you. Networking is the best way to get started - all you have to do is show an interest by going to a club and asking questions and they are usually more than delighted to show you the whole new world of model trains.

Actually, a club is about the best thing to do, because when you want to buy they will steer you in the direction of a reputable dealer who keeps his client base because he has integrity. Someone who knows will be only too happy to help you through the maze that’s out there on the internet. A good guideline is to go where the pro’s go.

If you don’t think you are ready to join a club just yet because you feel uncomfortable for some reason, you will find that you can go on the internet and join chat groups of fellow enthusiasts who will be only too happy to help. They will steer you in the right direction as far as what to get to start with, what brand to buy and who best to buy it from. This way you can get a good introduction into model trains.

The best way to spot a good dealer is to use your instinct - go with your gut. Don’t go with the “Johnny hustle” artist who is out to sell you the most expensive thing he can for commissions. The professional asks questions about what kind of project you have in mind, whether it be large or small, for your self or your child, and what kind of budget you have.

This is just a guideline to buying a model train on the internet, so give it a try - you’ll be chugging along in no time! You have many hours of enjoyment ahead of you.

Anyone who has spent the significant amount of time it takes to be a railroad hobbyist knows the importance of using model train display cases to keep their investment safe. There are far too many factors that can hinder the functioning of a model train not to take precautions against them. If you find the right one, not only will your investment and hobby be safe, but you’ll still be able to view and enjoy it as much as when it’s running.

You have two options when it comes to model train display cases, you can hire someone to build one for you, or you can take on the project and build it yourself. Of course hiring someone would be far easier, but much more expensive. If you’re like most of us, you’ll want to save some money and decide to build it yourself. I hope that these tips will give you some assistance in the process.

Instead of starting from scratch, you can buy some pre-fabricated cabinets - i.e. medicine cabinet-in which to store your model trains. Be sure to purchase the cabinets with glass front doors in order for your train pieces to be viewed. From here, you will design the set-up of the display case around the dimensions of your train pieces. This is inexpensive, fast, and easy to accomplish. These cabinets make the perfect model train display cases.

If starting from scratch, purchase enough wood to construct a similar structure as the cabinets above. The open-ended box you create will serve as the frame of your display case. It should be shallow and have dimensions to fit your model train pieces. When installing the shelving, you want to be sure that they are adjustable to different heights. By simply drilling different holes and inserting dowels you allow yourself the ability to adjust the shelving around to accommodate the different sizes of your pieces.

The shelving you decide upon should be either wood or glass. If you choose to go with the glass shelving, your model pieces should be displayed on the track pieces themselves, separated by stoppers on both ends. If you choose to go with wooden shelving, the pieces can simply be placed on mini dowels you have drilled into place to hold your model pieces in place.

When constructing the backing for your model train display case, many folks tend to go for a mirrored effect. Mirrored backing is much harder to work with than a simple wooden backing. However, if you wish your case to encompass a bit of class, then you may want to steer towards a mirrored backing. The doors once again need to be glass or some form of clear acrylic sheets in order for your model to be displayed and viewed. Be sure the hinges are strong and mounted correctly.

While hiring someone to construct your model train display case may be the easier way to go, you’ll be very pleased with your finished product considering you built it by hand and you saved yourself a load of money. Take your time and do it right, and you’ll be enjoying your model train set for years to come.

Many folks that are true enthusiasts of model railroads know the importance of having it cleaned periodically. Model railroad track cleaning is essential in the upkeep and maintenance of any structure that you have in collection in order to keep it running smoothly and without error. If you are unable to complete the cleaning yourself, then it’s time to find someone that can complete the service for you.

Model railroad track cleaning is a very tedious project. Every nook, cranny, and connective rail needs to be cleaned, aligned, and checked for wear and tear. Dirt and dust seem to be the biggest offenders when it comes to a track that isn’t functioning as it should. If you have a brass rail, then the possibility of oxide forming on the track is also a factor where the electrical current is hindered. That is why nickel-brass is recommended due to the oxide being a conductor of electricity and thus not interrupting the functioning at all.

If you are prepared to clean the track yourself, understand that you are in for quite the project. Cleaning the track takes some serious elbow grease, but there are some things you can do to make it easier for you. The first cleaning method is to purchase or make your own cleaning car. These cars can either use a dry abrasive wheel or pad, or a wet pad that removes the dust and dirt. Most hobbyists use both when completing track maintenance. The wet car uses a cloth moistened by track cleaning fluid, while the dry car trails behind. It’s an effective method when cleaning and a good way to keep from any further issues happening.

If your track appears to be extremely dirty or hasn’t been used for quite some time, then you may have to use an abrasive cleaning block to get it running properly again. You’ll have to rub the block along the track paying close attention to the turns, points, frogs, and other tracks in those areas. Do not use sandpaper to clean the track. It is too abrasive and may cause grooves that will later collect more dust and dirt. After you use the block, run a cloth along the track to remove any residue that has accumulated. You may even wish to use a vacuum as well to ensure there are no lingering dust and dirt particles laying on the track.

The key to any model railroad track cleaning is to keep it from becoming dirty in the first place. By isolating your layout from areas where there is a lot of dust or dirt accumulation, it significantly makes the cleaning process all that much easier. Keep windows closed, and insist that smokers refrain from doing so when near your rails. Install ceilings if the setting your layout is in doesn’t have one. These simple precautions will keep your train running smoothly, and allow you to enjoy it for years to come.

Building model railways is a great hobby that has been enjoyed by people for generations. In fact, many model railway hobbyists can remember getting a train set when they were children, and the enjoyment that they got from putting together those model railways. If you are interested in starting a model railroad hobby and aren’t sure where to begin, there are lots of ways to learn more about it.

The most common way to get started with a model railroad hobby is to buy a train set. A set will give you all of the pieces that you need, and many beginner sets contain directions for assembling the railway, as well as tips for setup. Before you even buy a set, however, you will have to know enough to choose what scale you want to work in and determine the items that you need to begin to build your model. Model railways come in a wide range of size scales, and everything that you purchase for your railway will have to be in the same scale for everything to work together properly. You can read more about the different scales on the Internet, or read one of the many excellent books on the subject.

Building model railways is a hobby that can be enjoyed by anyone, but it does require a fair amount of technical know-how. Beginning hobbyists can work with a simple kit to begin with and add details, new trains and scenery and more track as they become more experienced. The Internet is a great resource for learning more about getting started with this hobby. You can find articles on virtually every facet of building railways, as well as video tutorials. However, one of the best ways to learn more about the hobby, and how to get started is to join a model railway club and meet with other model railway hobbyists. You will find that most seasoned members of such clubs are a great wealth of information and enjoy sharing their knowledge with fledgling railway builders. Aside from helping you with your projects, you will probably find that you enjoy meeting with others with similar interests. There are clubs just about everywhere and most have a wide variety of activities that you can participate in, including exhibitions, classes or seminars, and social activities. Many model railway clubs work on group railroad projects and layouts at meetings, which is a great way to learn more about building model railways. Other members, however, will be your best resource, from answering technical questions to telling you where to get the best prices on railway supplies. Many clubs maintain a library of publications on model railways and sponsor exhibitions for its members. To find a model railway club in your area, you can search in one of the many online directories. Alternatively, if you are a bit more ambitions you might consider locating some other hobbyists in your area and starting a club of your own.
